More times than not, God confirms the work He is doing in my heart, through spoken words from others.  That was the case with Pastor Darrell’s sermon today.  I wrote yesterday about the internal struggle I was having with the next topic I will be writing on.  This morning Pastor spoke on The Sin of Stubbornness.  Not only have I been struggling with this in my writing, I have been battling with this in other areas in my life.  Goes without saying, the Holy Spirit “thumped’ me a bit this morning!

The following was taken from a message given at Heartland Worship Center in Agra, KS.  from Pastor Darrell Schmid.

The Sin of Stubbornness

 The scripture references are:

 Malachi 2: 1- 2; And now, O you priests, this commandment is for you. If you will not hear and if you will not lay it to heart to give glory to My name, says the Lord of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yes, I have already turned them to curses because you do not lay it to heart.

 Psalms 32:9;  Be not like the horse or the mule, which lack understanding, which must have their mouths held firm with bit and bridle, or else they will not come with you.

 2 Timothy 3: 1- 5; But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:  For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away.

 Definition for stubborn is unyielding, determined; pig headed. Stubborn is a person’s unwillingness to lean God’s ways, instead we yield to our own.

 Stubbornness governs and rules us!  Scriptures which show this to be true are:

 Exodus 32:9 – And the Lord said to Moses, I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people;

 1 Samuel 8:19 – Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, No! We will have a king over us.

Zechariah 7:11 – But they refused to pay attention to the Lord. They were stubborn. They turned their backs and covered up their ears.

 God is looking for availability not ability! 🙂  He is looking for people who are submissive, available and willing.

 Five Things Stubbornness Causes in our lives:

  1.  Sin Against the Holy Spirit
    * Rebellion against the Holy Spirit

  2. To Grieve the Holy Spirit
    * Offend Him
    *Not living in a pleasing acceptable manner of the Lord

  3. To Quench the Holy Spirit
    *Drowning the Holy Spirit in our life

  4. Causes the Holy Spirit to withdrawal from men.
    *If Holy Spirit leaves us we are in trouble with God, Man and Self
    *Psalms 51 – Repentance PrayerHAVE MERCY upon me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to the multitude of Your tender mercy and loving-kindness blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly [and repeatedly] from my iniquity and guilt and cleanse me and make me wholly pure from my sin! For I am conscious of my transgressions and I acknowledge them; my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done that which is evil in Your sight, so that You are justified in Your sentence and faultless in Your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in [a state of] iniquity; my mother was sinful who conceived me [and I too am sinful].Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; make me therefore to know wisdom in my inmost heart. Purify me with hyssop, and I shall be clean [ceremonially]; wash me, and I shall [in reality] be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness and be satisfied; let the bones which You have broken rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my guilt and iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right, persevering, and steadfast spirit within me. Cast me not away from Your presence and take not Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then will I teach transgressors Your ways, and sinners shall be converted and return to You. Deliver me from blood guiltiness and death, O God, the God of my salvation, and my tongue shall sing aloud of Your righteousness (Your rightness and Your justice). O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall show forth Your praise. For You delight not in sacrifice, or else would I give it; You find no pleasure in burnt offering. My sacrifice [the sacrifice acceptable] to God is a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart [broken down with sorrow for sin and humbly and thoroughly penitent], such, O God, You will not despise. Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion; rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. Then will You delight in the sacrifices of righteousness, justice, and right, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering; then bullocks will be offered upon Your altar.

  5. Stubbornness Causes direct Rebellion
    *Against Civil Authorities
    *Against the Divine Will of God

Once we confess our sin of stubbornness, we will start living in a yielded, open spirit to Him!

 1 John 1: 8 – 10 –  If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness
